Acting as Boise’s honorary representative to the world, the Cultural Ambassador engages with national and international audiences through the public expression of culture that helps develop, document, research, share, or reflect upon Boise’s culture and help make Boise the most livable city in the country. The Boise City Department of Arts and History manages the program, and the Boise City Mayor presents the honorific title at the Mayor’s Awards for Excellence in Arts & History, held in September of odd-numbered years. The cultural ambassador serves a two-year term.

Mayor Bieter and the City Council approved the creation of the Cultural Ambassador program in 2010 to demonstrate the importance of arts and culture in the city. In September 2015, Mayor Bieter announced that Treefort Music Fest and Pulitzer-Prize winning author Anthony Doerr will serve as the City’s co-cultural ambassadors until the end of 2017.
